French doors, remove the mullions! Before & After

Here's a simple update we made a few months ago and LOVE! We removed the mullions in our French doors for a cleaner and more modern look.  Now we obviously also did a whole family room makeover in this space as well including painting the walls and our red brick fireplace a warm gray.  But check out the French doors!

Here's the before...

And the After….

Ahhh, it brings the outdoors IN!

So how did we do it?  Well all three mullion sections are removable as they're attached by pins.  First I had my hubby remove the mullion frame.  Then he simply sawed the mullions out of the square frame.  Then we sanded the inch sized sections and painted.  This picture below gives a visual…

So you may be thinking why didn't we just remove the whole frame?  Well then the doors would be too open to the screened porch.  We needed as much framing inside the door that we could get.  And even that 1/2 inch of wood makes a difference.  Okay so one last look…

I think it's a thousand times better.  So if you've got French doors, take a closer look.  You may be able to remove the mullions for a clean, open and more modern look!

Okay, simple (and free) updates like this are one of my favorite things!

  3. I think your new look is great for your room. I especially love the new fireplace. Call me crazy, though, but I guess I'm a real traditionalist cause I like our French doors with the frames in, rather than out! Too bad you didn't have our doors, the mullions practically fall out if you just look at them funny - ha.

    1. Ours used to fall out too, haha! Maybe that's why I removed them ;) Some spaces I do love the traditional mullions for sure. But for our smaller family room with several more modern furniture pieces, this works the best!

    2. boy I wish our mullions would just fall out. But the folks who sold the house to us had everything reprinted, and clearly the mullion pins were put in while the paint was still wet and they are all stuck. I have broken most of them trying to get them loose. Any ideas beyond jiggling and prying?

  6. I like this a lot. I've been debating about mullions. I have 15 new, exterior 36" French doors from a reuse center that don't have the mullions. I'm planning to use these for the walls of my sunroom, but couldn't decide if I wanted the visual distraction of the wood. You've tipped the scales. They're remaining clear!

  7. Can you give more detail about how your husband did this? I have single glass pane French doors with fake mullions that I want to remove, but I don't want to damage the glass. Did he remove the door from the hinges before removing the molding?

    1. Hi no he didn't remove the door. These mullions were removable with pins. So we were lucky they weren't embedded into the glass.
