Painting & Glazing - faux pumpkins & leaves

Hey guys, I worked on a fun project yesterday while the kids were in school.  I painted and glazed a few faux pumpkins!

Now the reason behind the color change is simple.  Our new dining room rug courtesy of Medallion Rugs, that we are loving by the way, has cool colors in grays, blues and tans.  So my centerpiece complete with an orange pumpkin and leaves was looking way too bright!  Okay here's the new rug below.  Isn't it fabulous?

Don't worry we'll be painting those red walls soon!  I'm thinking a warm modern gray or a smokey light blue.

So I painted my orange pumpkin with acrylic paint in an Heirloom White color, and then glazed it with a dark brown glaze.  My method for glaze is simple, I mix brown acrylic paint in the color "burnt umber" with a little water.  That's it!  I simply paint the watery paint mixture onto my surface, and then wipe off the excess.  This process leaves behind just a hint of brown color, giving an aged effect.

I even glazed these faux leaves below on the right.  Check out the difference.  The one on the left isn't glazed.  See the warmth and character glazing adds.  This is also a great way to make anything fake look more real because let's face it, faux flowers and leaves often times are way too bright and do look fake.

Okay first let me show you the original centerpiece.  Before...

And now my new centerpiece.  After...

Ahhh, I love it!  It's not so in your face bright.  And overall is a much more sophisticated look - perfect for Thanksgiving Day!  So what do you think, yay on the heirloom white pumpkins?

  1. Definitely YAY! I painted my beat up old faux pumpkins last year - drywall putty works just fine on fake pumpkins!

By the way, I adore your new rug - it's gorgeous! Crazy that is the color scheme I'm slowly working towards in our family/great room.

  2. Drywall putty, that's Awesome!! Yes we actually started with the blue/gray in our family room. And then it lead to the dining room. One project always leads to another that's for sure!
