Renewing an antique with Olive Oil & Vinegar!

Hey guys, today I've been busy writing a post for Old Time Pottery's Blog, a fun site I contribute to every month.  For Friday's post I'm featuring our dining room all gussied up for the Holidays, and I have to say putting dishes and accessories on the table for Thanksgiving in October is so much fun ;)

Speaking of our dining room.  We have a small sideboard that's a family heirloom probably from the early 1900's.  And I looked at it today and thought, wow it's seen better days that's for sure.

Then I remembered something I pinned a while back on Pinterest here.  You can bring new life to old wood furniture with simple Olive Oil and Vinegar.  So I tried it, one part vinegar to 3 parts Olive Oil.  Mixed them with a spoon really well and just wiped the oil into the wood with a soft cloth.  Then I waited a half hour and wiped off any excess oil.  And wow what a difference!

Check out the before...

And the After...

Isn't it Amazing how the wood grain just pops?  Now this old piece obviously is made of a few different types of wood, since that's how they rolled back then -  they used what they had!  But I think the wood variation adds to it's character.

There is a small cracked area that we need to fix, but what a fabulous old piece!

  1. I've never heard of this method before -- but the after picture is stunning! I especially love the different woods.
