One Room Challenge Reveal... A bonus room makeover

Hey guys, today I'm linking up to the One Room Challenge Finale, Wahoo so exciting!

For the 90+ participants, we've had 6 weeks to completely re-design an entire room.  And I chose to give our bland bonus room a full on STYLE RE-FRESH!  So let's start with the Before...

If you'll remember this is our bonus room where our kids mainly hang out with their friends and play video games.  And our entire family watches movies together in this space as well.  In it's before state, it really was just a hodge podge of leftover pillows and art.  I actually got a head start on this makeover over the Summer when we had the walls painted a nice light gray.

I'm participating in the One Room Challenge because I've been wanting to infuse some style and color into this space.  Many of the rooms in our home have soft, neutral colors and are more traditional.  However this is a room above our garage where I can have some fun with color, pattern and texture.  And make it a space, designed on a budget, our whole family can enjoy!   The ORC was also the motivation I needed to paint our dark wood armoire, which I've been wanting to do for years now.

Here's the room finished...

And here was my Design Board...

Even though all the main furniture pieces stayed, we made several changes.  First, we removed the ceiling fan and added a chic flush mount ceiling light.

We also added simple bamboo shades.  I LOVE the texture they add, and since we watch movies in this space, they block out the perfect amount of light.

We switched out the old cream curtain panels for simple white cotton panels.  It's such a simple change but they really help lighten up this space.

Check out my Diy painted armoire!  The color is Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. It's a great navy, not too dark or light and has a gray undertone.  And adding new Ikea hardware to the armoire instantly gave it a more modern and updated feel.  The pulls originally were silver.  I gave them a coat of spray paint with Krylon's Metallic Gold.  And new accessories above the armoire gave this old piece new life.  This is my favorite part of the entire makeover since the hubby and I bought this piece nearly 20 years ago when we were first married!

Ahhh, this room now has color, pattern and loads of texture!  The two ikat pillows I ordered on Etsy at The Bluebird Shop, and the other patterned one is from Hobby Lobby.

You won't believe where I found this brass reading lamp above.  Our attic!  Yes we had a garage sale several weeks ago and it was just sitting there waiting to be loved ;)

This simple tray makes our ottoman function as a coffee table, I love that!

And check out my Diy Art below.  This canvas is actually the same one from the Before picture!  I simply primed over that dark art and painted it using a color combination of turquoise, cream and gold.  You can read more about the first part of this project here.  Then this past week-end with scotch blue painters tape I added the gold stripes.   I may change my mind down the road.  But for now, and not wanting to buy a new $300 large art piece, we think it's a lot of fun!

And in a crazy stroke of luck, I found this little end table below at a discount store for only $25.  And it looks almost exactly like the table in the design board.  I'm telling you it's like this room was meant to be!

You know, so many suburban homes these days have "bonus rooms".  And they're great spaces for play rooms and game rooms if you've got kids.  But they don't have to be un-inpsiring catch all spaces like ours was.  Now that our kiddos are teenagers and most of their things can be stored in their bedrooms, and/or in closet spaces.  I decided to reclaim this space, and make it a fun media/family room everyone can enjoy - both kids and adults!

  6. Jane!!! You have completely refreshed this space. I love how you brought in a little coolness to balance the brown sectional - the wall color and white panels look so great as a backdrop, and the Hale Navy is the PERFECT compliment I think!!!! Love it - what a great space to hang out with your family!

    1. Thanks Lisa!! Yes movie nights will be an event around here for sure. I agree with the navy blue too. But I knew it was a great choice since I was inspired by Emily A. Clarks navy armoire!
