One Room Challenge - bonus/media room makeover!

Hey guys, I'm so excited for the very first time to be participating in the One Room Challenge hosted by one of my favorite blogs Calling It Home!

Now if by chance you don't know about the one room challenge let me fill you in!  Twice a year a select group of Amazing designers completely re-do an entire room in 6 weeks.  And then other bloggers & designers join in the fun too and re-do a room in their homes and link up along the way!

So I plan to re-do our media/bonus room.  Here's the Before...

And here's a Design Board of how the room hopefully will look After, keeping in mind this sofa below is just a similar version of our existing sectional.

Ahhh, I am loving this room already!

Now this room is mainly a place where our kids hang out with their friends, and we also have family movie nights in this space too, so don't judge the before too harshly - It's really just a collection of odds and ends ;)  But the problem with this space is that the wall color is too warm and I also really want to lighten things up and make it more clean and modern.  I've actually already started this makeover.  We've since painted the walls a cool gray, and that wild art on the left has been made over completely.

So all the main furniture pieces in the room will stay including the sofa and armoire.  And keep in mind we're on a major budget with this makeover since this is where our teenage kids hang out, you know how that goes ;)   Having said all that, here's what we'll do...

* Remove the ceiling fan
* Add a simple flush mount light
* Hang new curtain panels
* Hang new art
* Provide new lighting
* New throw pillows
* Paint the dark wood armoire

I'll be using this Ikea black and white print below.  I love the large white matte and the picture is actually a wheat field...I love nature in home decor too!

We'll remove that ugly ceiling fan and replace it with a simple n' sleek flush mount ceiling fixture like this one...

We'll add throw pillows in color combinations of taupes, yellows and grays to help lighten up our brown sectional.  These aren't the exact ones below, but will have a similar pattern.

And finally, and this is the main reason I wanted to participate in the challenge, I'll be painting our dark wood armoire!  This is something I've wanted to do for a long time so I'm very excited.  Not sure of the color exactly but I do want a gloss finish.

Here's one below that I like, especially the gold hardware...

 And here's another look at my Inspiration Board below.  I have to say I'm really loving this pale blue color on the armoire, that may be our paint color!

Okay I'm excited to participate, and this is just the motivation I need to finish this room!  So what do you guys think, what color would you paint the armoire?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I'd go with grey. Will look great. AND yes! get rid of that ceiling fan. I hate those things (although probably nice to have in the summer.)

    1. I agree Caitlin dark grey or even navy are my color options for the armoire with gold knobs. Oh and I know exactly how ugly that ceiling fan is. The only reason it's there is because the hubby won that battle ;) Certain spaces I really like having a ceiling fan, this room is not one of them.

  2. Can't wait to see how this room turns out! Good luck!

  3. Love your color palette and the accessories you've picked out so far - looking forward to following along!

    1. Thanks Kris, I'm excited to re-do this room! It's definitely time ;)

  4. Pretty and I love the navy color for the armoire

  5. I'd love navy on the armoire - especially if you could find some amazing gold hardware. It would be a show piece in your new room! Can't wait to see what you pick!

  6. A navy grey for the armoire will perfectly fit your room. However if I were you I would choose some white hardware instead of the gold ones. I am sure that you will do an amazing job and can't wait to see the final result. You will share it with us, right?

  7. I love your plan for the room! I really like that navy armoire too! I can't wait to see your progress over the next few weeks!

Thanks for your feedback...
